If you're measuring "fat free mass", couldn't your numbers be skewed by increased water retention? I don't have any personal experience, but I've always heard that large doses of test can increase water retention, which could certainly skew the numbers by a few pounds. The no work out and aas gained 7 lbs of lean body mass. This doesn't mean lean muscle. Seeing as they were taking mgs test a week, it's safe to say that is most likely all water. You won't magically gain large amounts of muscle like that without doing anything.
Wish people would stop quoting this study. They used MRI to measure x-sectional muscle mass. It's a solid study. It shouldn't be dismissed. As for the lean body mass measurement, they used an underwater weighing, which would cancel out water retention.
I know I look really lean when I'm holding a bunch of water. Also, muscle, tendon, and bone totally includes water weight. AAS makes everything easier. That's precisely why we use it. I think they assume it's harder because it allows people to train harder, get better results dieting harder, etc. I'm not saying it's right. All of the things you described still make what we do easier. If it allows you to work harder to achieve better results, then you are in effect making things easier on yourself.
