I'm trying to get back into One Piece , a show that I was a huge fan of five years ago, but some of the people behind it are making it pretty difficult for me for one reason only: The way female characters are portrayed is just ridiculous. As time went on, Nami and Robin and most of the other female characters are drawn in a more and more perverted fashion.
I'm not a prude or anything, but that makes it pretty difficult to enjoy it on a non-teenage boy level. This movie is a prime example of how ridiculously they're portrayed. This aside, Film Z is a nice little anime adventure film, but I found the villain to be way…. Anything less than 5 stars does not do this justice. This is the One Piece film that we've all been waiting for and finally deserved.
There is way too many things I loved about this to count them. All I know for sure is that Oda is a master writer. Everything in this was perfect and even if you didn't know anything about One Piece, but had a crash course on most of it before watching Film: Z you'd at least enjoy it too!
And for everyone that's been following One Piece for the past 16 years this is a must see. I have to say though, Aokiji's singing gave me goosebumps. It really shows throughout the whole film that…. I went in blind watching this only knowing that One Piece is a super popular manga about pirates. This is a stand-alone film based on the ongoing series. Now after having seen this movie, I understand the appeal. It's kinda funny, well-animated, the cast is diverse including a walking talking skeleton, what?
In Z there is a villain out there named Zephyr who is bent on destroying all the pirates and it's up to our hero Luffy and his gang to stop him before it's too late. The story leaves ample time for jokes and humor. The action is insane and I have no idea what was going on half of the time. Overall the animation was pretty good though, everything looked fluid and colourful. However, the film could use some better characterization for the people not familiar with these characters.
So this is the One Piece film I promised my friend I wouldn't watch without him and two years after I made that promise he was finally ready to see it!
This is a very solid one piece film, there were a few tiny bits that took me out of it so I'm hesitant to call it the best but it's certainly top 3. I liked Z as a villain, intelligent, strong and angry. I loved the way it blended the cannon lore and characters all the marines especially into it so well but I guess having Oda write it helps that. The animation was also some of the best I've seen in any One piece. If I address the…. This movie is better than Strong World.
I figure I should start with that, because my Strong World review reads pretty negative so if I say this first this review will start off with a positive vibe.
I even say that I don't think Film Z will be much better but there's definite improvements here. One thing is does better than Strong World is that it actually integrates with the existing world and plot of One Piece pretty well, while Strong World only did that in a special manga chapter and not in the actual movie at all.
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth. The first batch of films were all entertaining and fun in their own ways, but there is something about the newest ones that are so much better. There is a really story progression, the crew is better than ever, visually they are stunning, and they really connect, emotionally.
There is real depths to the story. Love the outfits they get to wear, wish we could see for of it in the television series. A very strong film if you like One Piece. Knowing some of the background of the show, but being behind, it was highly entertaining, well done and made sense.
This movie is a shining example as to why One Piece is great. Film Z is a brilliant piece of art that I find myself coming back to time and time again. The animation is incredible. The art style is vibrant and fun to look at. And the overarching story going on across the movie is wonderful. If I had anything to doc it for, it follows the traditional 'fight a guy twice and lose, come back in the last fight and win' model of storytelling that One Piece films have fallen prey to.
However, it does it so well that it's hard to fault it for that either. The banana boat chase in the middle of the movie is a bit odd too. If you're a fan of One Piece you need to watch this movie. One Piece Film Z. Genres animation action adventure. Saved by impressive visuals and a complex, nuanced villain. Best anime film fucking ever.
Lets leave it at this: One of the films with a great villain. This movie is freakin' rad!
