  • Do you prefer to grow cannabis starting from seed, or from a clone?
  • May 15, When you're thinking of growing your own cannabis you have a major decision to make – will you source your plants from clones or from seeds. Oct 23, Growing Cannabis Plants: Seeds Versus Clones Each one has its pros and cons, and choosing the right option can mean the difference. How is cloning different than growing directly from cannabis seeds? The truth is that both methods have their own distinct advantages and disadvantages.

Clones or Advantages Cannabis of and Seeds Disadvantages from Growing

Although seeds grow faster than clones once rooted, when you plant seeds it can take a little more time to get to harvest time than clones. If you are growing outdoors, choose seeds from a breeder that is suitable to your area, based on how much sunlight you get and for how long your outdoor flowering season lasts. Ideally, you want enough time so that the seed-grown plant can reach 9 feet or higher before flowering season starts. Seeds are preferable for this purpose because they product taproots, which are important to supporting tall plants.

A reputable seed company will offer thorough notes and recommendations from the breeders and testers. This information lets you know how long the average plant takes to finish, and how much weight you can expect from an optimal grow.

Ask questions such as: What pests and diseases are their strains more or less susceptible to, and why? How do they handle stress? Has this genetic line been known to create hermaphrodites often?

Take the time to research the seed bank, look at the online reviews, talk to the growers and breeders, and ask questions. A good seed bank has documented everything about the plant. This documentation is your foundation for your garden to succeed. For the grower going from seed to the outdoor plot, a basic knowledge of climate, latitude and longitude, and sunlight schedule is a must. Trying to grow a field of sativa too far north will end with premature buds, since there will not be enough time to finish outdoors with high success.

The ability to know how to sex plants from seed is also crucial if you start from seed. Sexing the plants as soon as possible can stop an entire garden from becoming pollinated. Learn how to identify male plants right away. Seeds can take a little more time than clones to get started growing and be ready for harvest, since clones are usually already "mature" and established when you start growing. Creating your own seeds will save you monetary cost, but there is still a cost in time and effort to cross together two plants to make seeds.

Seeds are a good way for many people to start growing because they can be easily purchased off the internet. Where can I safely purchase cannabis seeds? Sometimes you will find good seeds bagseed in marijuana that you have purchased which can definitely be used to start growing. The downside of using seeds that you find is you will have no idea what to expect as far as growth, yields, or size.

The bud quality of bagseed is often different from the buds it came from, since it is not a stablized strain. It could be like the bud it was found it, or it could be completely different. When using unknown seeds, you will need to determine the gender your plants as they are growing to prevent any males from pollinating your females.

Healthy seeds should be dark brown or light grey. If you find seeds which are small and white, they are likely immature and won't germinate properly. Seeds which are kept in a cool, dark place remain viable for years, though after a few years you will notice that they take a bit longer to germinate and you may get a few more duds than with fresh seeds. Seedlings from older seeds can also be really slow growing even if you're giving them perfect conditions.

Germinate Your Cannabis Seeds! Compared to seeds, clones usually have an overall shorter grow period and therefore will be ready to harvest a bit more quickly. Clones can be quickly grown into a 'mom' and recloned, for a constant source of new plants. Make sure you have at least two node regions on the cutting. Keep at least an inch of space between the first node region and the cut. Srape the bottom bit of the cutting before you dip it into the cloning solution.

Spray them once a day with water to help with humidity if its in a propagation kit or pot or whatever you using. Leave no more than an inch between the cut and the first node region. Keep in mind, the longer the stem on the cutting, the harder it will be for the cutting to suck up nutrients and water.

This form of cloning seems to work better with plants that have tough veins in the leaves; they act like a stem in a way. Like vines, grapes worked if I remember right, so leaf cloning would be great for growing grapes for wine.

Only clone terminal clippings. Has anyone had their clones start budding at about 5 inches? What do I do?

Thinking I should cut off the top when they are a little bit bigger. What do you think? Content failed to load. Country United States Canada. Sorry, you're not old enough to visit Leafly.
